The spirit and the flesh, when discussing Christianity, this topic come up a lot, and for good reason. When God first created man, the spirit and the flesh were one. The fall of man however, ripped those two things into opposition.
When we choose to walk with God, we must deny the sinfull tendencies that are a result from the fall of man. The spirit of God guides us to walk in God’s will. The lust of the flesh guide us to live in sin.
GAL 5:16-17 KJV
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
In Galatians, we see the struggle we all deal with daily. If we walk in the spirit, we cannot fulfill the lust of the flesh. Contrary to that, if we are fulfilling the lust of the flesh, we cannot walk In the spirit.
These two forces are constantly waging war in us. It’s the very definition of good vs. evil. The spirit is from God, the fleshly lust from Satan.
Note the last part in the verse, we cannot do the things we would. See the flesh prevents us from doing the Godly things we should and would do, the spirit prevents us from committing horrible atrocities against God.
I urge you to spend some time today reflecting on what runs your life. Are you spirit led or fleshly led? The flesh is right now, but the spirit is eternal. Please don’t trade a bit of lust today for an eternity in the spirit.
